Top ten essential gardening tools

(NC)—With so many gardening tools on the market today, Canadians can become frustrated trying to determine which ones they truly need. Whether you're just starting out or you're an experienced gardener, The Home Depot Canada offers a list of essential tools to help you enjoy time spent beautifying your yard.

Pruner. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes for simple to complex cutting. If you're looking for a strong multi-purpose pruner, go for the bypass model.

Rake. This is wonderful tool for removing debris left over from the winter thaw and for the Fall. Consider a metal rake. Their teeth last longer than plastic or wooden ones.

Shovel. A hand shovel is useful for smaller gardening jobs. Select one with a comfortable handle. A long-handed spade shovel with a pointed blade is necessary for moving soil, digging holes and planting.

Cultivator. These hooked tools come with three to five prongs and are ideal for loosening, mixing and aerating soil. Cultivators 12 to 18 inches long will do the job.

Edger. Beautify the edges of your garden and lawn with this tool. Select one with a long-handle so you can create the shapes you want without getting down on your hands and knees.

Broom. Sweep away grass and debris from your sidewalk, patio and driveway with a long-handled push broom. Select one that is at least 18 inches wide.

Wheelbarrow. Make it easy to carry supplies, dirt and other rubble around the yard with a wheelbarrow. Ensure the size of the wheelbarrow is one that you can easily handle when it's fully loaded.

Hose. Rejuvenate your yard's treasures regularly with water from a hose. Choose a durable hose that is reinforced with a mesh layer. Consider using a watering device that covers a large surface area such as a watering wand.

Gloves. Keep your hands clean with a pair of cotton gardening gloves for basic gardening tasks. If you're working in muddy territory or spraying pesticides, wear gloves made to protect you from harsh elements and chemicals.

Safety glasses. Protect your eyes from debris and the sun with safety glasses. They now come in fashionable styles, sizes and colours.
