(NC)—Did you know that 10 to 25 percent of the average family's total heating bill literally goes out the window? Heat is drawn to the cold glass of windows to escape a home.
Experts at Hunter Douglas offer the following easy tips to make your home physically fit for winter cold:
• Weatherize–Seal up holes, weatherstrip doors and insulate attic floors. When the fireplace is not in use, keep the damper closed.
• Insulate–Add insulation at the window with window fashions with high-energy ratings. One such window covering is Duette shades from Hunter Douglas, which pioneered energy efficiency at the window, with a honeycomb construction that traps air in the honeycomb cells. The new Architella Collection raises energy efficiency to a new level featuring a unique, patented honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb design for additional air pockets.
• Improve and Maintain Your Mechanical Systems–Service and clean your furnace annually and change or clean the filters monthly in heating season. According to experts, lowering the heat from 72° to 65° eight hours a day can reduce heating bills by 10 percent.
• Watch Your Windows–On sunny winter days, open window coverings to let in solar heat, especially on south-facing windows.
• Keep the Air Circulating–Don't block floor registers, baseboards or radiators. If you have ceiling fans, turn them on in reverse when using heat. Warm air rises so the reverse air flow can help circulate the warm air around the entire room.
• Landscape–Plant deciduous trees on the south and east sides of your home to keep your home warm in winter and cool in the summer. Plant evergreens on the north and west sides to stop wind.
