Buy a house and build a home

(NC)—More than 1.5 million Canadians lack safe and affordable housing. That means nearly one in every 20 Canadians may not have a place they can truly call home. In an effort to help turn the tide on this often overlooked crisis, The Home Depot Canada and Habitat for Humanity have once again partnered together for the second annual Buy a House, Build a Home Campaign. This year, the campaign raised more than $230,000, almost tripling what was raised by Canadians last year.

During the four-week campaign, which ran during the month of June, Canadians who visited any one of the 166 The Home Depot locations across the country had the opportunity to purchase a commemorative paper house for two dollars.

The proceeds from this campaign are donated to Habitat for Humanity and used to purchase the materials needed to help build affordable housing for families in need. The result of this year's Buy a House, Build a Home campaign generated enough funds to purchase materials to build 230 bedrooms across the country.

The Home Depot also issued a national challenge offering a special build grant to the community that raised the most funds. This year, the winning community was Carleton Place, Ontario and a $25,000 home build grant was given to the National Capital Region Habitat for Humanity affiliate for a local project.

Since 1996, The Home Depot has been the largest supporter of Habitat for Humanity in Canada and currently donates more than $3 million in funding and products and thousands of volunteer hours each year.
